Sonia Funk, R.N.T., is a Registered Nutritional Therapist and Employee Wellness Consultant with international experience.  She is a member of the Balance Wellness Program, the founder of Cooperative Medicine and was a regular guest on Dahlia Kurtz's show on CJOB.

Sonia returned to Manitoba in 2011, after living and working abroad for many years. (Toronto, New York, London, Ottawa & The Middle East - in a palace... but that's a long story ;) She brought with her a wealth of International experience and perspective that have shaped her unique and effective approach to Collaborative Healthcare. While her work is largely based in food and nutrition, she relies heavily on her knowledge of the link between emotional, mental and physical well being and on collaborating with other practitioners and doctors of all traditions. She values all perspectives and tries to combine the best of them to suit her clients needs.

Through her international and personal life experience Sonia has come to understand people and the body very well. She has worked with many Health Practitioners and Doctors along the way: from Medical Doctors to Naturopaths and Homeopaths, Chiropractors, Bodytalk Practitioners, Massage Therapists, Personal Trainers, Acupuncturists, all the way to Dr. Guy Meadows, "The Sleep Doctor," in London, UK. You name it, she has explored it. Sonia has Diploma in Nutritional Consulting from Alive Academy and has earned her designation as a Registered Nutritional Therapist through The Canadian Association of Natural Nutritional Practitioners (cannp.ca) She brings a well rounded, balanced perspective and empathy to her practice - she knows on a deep level that the greater the degree to which she considers her client's individual lifestyle, culture, personality, history and emotional disposition, in her work with them, the greater the degree of success and healing they achieve.

The finer details if you wish...

Sonia spent her 20s writing, recording and touring with her band. In early 2006 Sonia decided it was time for a change. She enrolled in a Nutritional Consulting Diploma Program through Alive Academy and began her studies while living in Toronto.

Later that year she moved on to New York where she continued her studies by correspondence, and volunteered at the New York Open Center.  Through the Open Center she taught Nutrition Classes at an HIV Day Treatment Center in Manhattan's Lower East side, bringing Whole Foods Market on as a Sponsor. In the spring of 2007 Sonia returned to Winnipeg to complete a summer internship at Natural Essentials and that Autumn, she made another move - all the way across the ocean to the United Kingdom. Sonia continued towards her full certification while working under the umbrella of Lifecheck Health in London.  This work resulted in travel to work for high profile clients in the Middle East, a highlight in her career. She returned to Canada, spent some time with Dr. Ayoubzadeh at the Integral Health Clinic in Ottawa and then headed back home to Manitoba

Along the way Sonia kept reading - beyond the realm of her courses and exams. Her interests and desire to learn led her all the way to and through the philosophies and practices of Ayurvedic Medicine, Chinese Medicine, CBT, Breath Work, Psychotherapy, and the list goes on. More recently, she is fascinated by the findings of the relatively new field in Western Medicine called psychoneuroimmunology - which studies the undeniable relationship between emotions, stress and physiology in relation to our health and illness.  The learning curves of being a consultant, coupled with the experience that living and working in 4 countries can provide, has allowed Sonia to weave together her own well rounded philosophy and flexible approach to health and happiness.  Her perspective is unique and her work is effective... it's often fun as well.  She embraces and works with the deep and intricate connection between the various states of body, mind and emotion of the whole person - or - The Whole Avocado  ;)

In Summary...

Sonia always expects that no two clients or participants will ever need exactly the same thing. As such, her clients and workshop attendees benefit greatly from her flexible approach to each persons individual concerns, circumstances and lifestyle. Sonia has helped clients with everything from low energy, headaches and weight loss, digestive troubles and depression, to anxiety and how to relate more effectively and exist more serenely amongst the daily chaos and demands of work and relationships. Clients dealing with more serious conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, Kidney disease, MS and cancer, have experienced a vast improvement in the quality of their lives.

Sonia is a member in good standing with the Canadian Association of Natural Nutritional Practitioners. Her designation is now recognized by ManuLife, GreenShield, iA Financial Group and Blue Cross Alberta, with more insurance companies to come on board soon.

From 'When the Body says No' by Gabor Mate, MD:

"Trying to identify and to answer the question of stress.... is more likely to lead to health than ignoring the question." In healing, every bit of information, every piece of the truth, may be crucial. If a link exists between emotions and physiology, NOT to inform people of it will deprive them of a powerful tool."
